How to strategize for a gray divorce

When Washington residents begin to approach the age of retirement, the stakes in their divorces are raised. This may be the last chance for someone to secure his or her financial future. If divorcing individuals do not obtain their full share of their marital estates, they may find themselves having to make lifestyle changes and push off their retirement plans.

It is unavoidable that there may be profound financial effects of a divorce. Practically everyone will feel an impact because one set of assets is being divided into two. However, these effects can be mitigated if one is fully prepared for the divorce negotiations and makes the proper decisions.

This begins with preparation for the divorce. While many simply do not want to think about it, the best thing to do is to strategize for what is to come. It begins with cataloging all assets and trying to figure out what the other spouse has as well. By being aware of all of the property that exists, one has a better sense of what he or she would want and need from the divorce.

One should also keep his or her financial goals foremost in mind during negotiations. While there are times for concession and compromise, one should know that each concession can mean a change in his or her future lifestyle. A person should not always take a hard line but know that sensible decisions must be made.

The first step towards negotiating a divorce agreement that may preserve one’s financial future is to hire a divorce attorney. Without a lawyer, a person is flying blind during divorce negotiations and may sacrifice some of his or her retirement assets when it is not necessary. An attorney might help keep his or her client focused and remind that person of how the divorce negotiations could impact things such as retirement plans and possible inheritances for his or her children.
