Figuring out the ideal custody arrangement for the whole family after a divorce can be a complicated matter. Parents in Washington, however, can achieve a custody arrangement that works for all the members of the family and that helps them move forward with their lives.

Putting the kids’ needs first

The process of divorce can be an emotionally draining one. Parents are still working through the issues that led to their split and the emotions caused by this can be difficult to overcome. Figuring out child custody in the middle of this can seem like a mountain that is impossible to climb. However, putting the kids’ needs first can help parents focus their efforts on how to jointly raise emotionally healthy children even when the marriage has not worked out.

Ideas for making custody work

When parents are focused on their children’s emotional well-being after the divorce, they can do a range of things to support their children. Some of these ideas include:

  • Having consistent family meals
  • Both parents attending their children’s sports competitions or activities
  • Establishing and following the same routines in both homes
  • Going on vacations together as a family
  • Prioritizing holidays to spend them together as a family

A custody schedule that works for all

Parents will also need to figure out a parenting schedule that can work for both the parents and the children. In some cases, the court will decide the schedule. However, if parents can communicate positively and collaborate on creating a parenting schedule specially designed for their family’s needs, they will also be more committed to following the schedule.

The end of a marriage is not the end of a family. However, you must be willing to put aside the negative feelings that often come with divorce and focus on what both parents can do to continue raising their children successfully.
